Tips for Spending the First Night in Your New Home

What do you need?

Tips to help you through your first night in your new home from McLean & McLean Custom Home Builders in Leduc

The day has finally come - the first night in your new home! It has just dawned on you that you have not prepared anything for you and your family's first night. Don't panic, we are here to help!

Your "First Night" Bag

Whether it's the week before or even the day before your first night in your new home, it's smart to pack a box or bag filled with your must have essentials. The last thing you want to deal with is trying to find your PJ's and tooth brush in a sea of boxes - yikes! By having your first night essentials with you it makes the moving process a little less stressful. Here is a list of things you may need:

  • Toothbrushes and tooth paste
  • Toiletries
  • Medications
  • Extra underwear and clothes - just in case your movers arrive later than expected
  • First aid kit
  • Chargers for phones and any other necessary electronics
  • Kids favorite toy - if needed
  • Pet's bed and favorite toys - if needed
  • Air mattress - if beds haven't arrived

Pack Your Home Must Haves

After the first Night bag is packed and ready to go, it's time for your home essentials. Packing these items will save you time and money instead of running to the store for things that you already have.

  • Snacks
  • Trash Bags
  • Flashlight
  • Blankets, sheets and pillows
  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towel
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Lightbulbs
  • Bottled water
  • Bath towels
  • Extra batteries
  • Shower curtain - if needed
  • Paper Plates and plastic utensils - because who wants to do dishes after a long day of moving?
  • Cleaning supplies

Set Up Your Pet

If you have a pet then you know how stressful new environments and situations can be for them - most animals are not big fans of change. You should set up somewhere for your furry friend to eat and drink that is similar to their old surroundings. While going through the unpacking process, many people tend to accidentally neglect their animals because they are so focused at the job at hand. A bit of attention can go a long way! If you have a dog, take him/her for a walk around your new neighborhood so they can enjoy all of the new smells and they can start getting comfortable with the change.

Plan for Dinner

It's time to turn your attention to the kitchen. To ensure that you can eat comfortably make sure to unpack a couple of chairs and a table, this is important because nobody wants to eat standing up or sitting on the floor. Everyone is going to be tired and grumpy from the big move, the last thing you want is for everyone to be hangry! Maybe cooking isn't the best option - ask your new neighbors or check online to find great food places in your new area and give one a try.
