Maintaining Your New Home

Tips & Tricks

Steps in keeping your new home looking its best!

Receiving the keys to your new home is always an exciting occasion - everything is all shiny and new. Most homeowners often don't realize that to keep their space looking in excellent condition, it requires maintenance and time. Here are some tips to help keep your new home in great shape!

Maintain your Curb AppealMaintain curb appeal

Making sure the exterior of your home is looking the best, can mean less work for you in the long run, especially when it comes to resale value. Keeping your lawn mowed in the summer and fertilizing it in the spring, is a great way to make sure your home looks the best it can. Your lawn is one of the first things people notice when they look at a home. Make sure to check the exterior of your home before winter hits, this way if you find a small problem it is easily fixed.

Change Your Air Filters Set a reminder on your phone to change your air filters

Most people often forget that they should be changing their heat and air filters and also their refrigerator filters often. If you have any pets in your home, changing the air filter in your furnace prevents any dust, dirt, mold spores, allergens and bacteria that comes from dirt and animal dander from building up in the air you breathe. A great tip is to set a reminder on your phone that will send you an alert to let you know when each filter should be changed, this way you have no excuse to forget!

Kids and Pets  Pay attention to rules for kids and pets

Setting ground rules with your children such as "no food anywhere else but the table" and "coloring only on paper" could save you lots of money and quite a few headaches. If you have any non-housetrained pets, make sure to set up an area for them that is not carpeted to make sure any accidents are not permanent. Cats tend to cause damage when they're bored, it may be time to splurge on a new cat tree to take their attention off of your walls and furniture.

Organization is key to keeping your home looking newOrganize Your Supplies

The saying "a place for everything and everything in its place" applies to this tip. Dedicate certain places in your home for any cleaning and maintenance supplies and make sure to put everything back where you originally had it after you're done using it. By organizing your supplies you actually save time trying to find everything you need, plus you will save money because you won't go out and repurchase something you already own.

Protect Against FiresProtect your home against fires

A great rule to follow is whenever we change our clocks forward or backwards (because of day light savings time) that's when you should be replacing the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It also doesn't hurt to check your fire extinguishers around this time as well. Cleaning out your dyers lint often is a great way to protect your family and new home from unwanted fire damage as well.

Get your Roof Make your roof is inspectedInspected

Don't take your roof for granted! Make sure to have a professional inspect your roof every three years to prevent common issues that could be easily avoidable. By doing these routine inspections, you could expand your roofs lifespan from twenty years to thirty years!
